Boutique Modern, a modular housing company known for its innovative approach to affordable homebuilding, has filed a notice of intention to appoint administrators, raising concerns over the future of several housing developments across Sussex.
The firm, which has been active in modular construction projects throughout southern England, is being supported through the process by FRP Advisory. According to FRP, the company is not yet in administration — the filing grants it temporary protection from creditor action while it explores strategic options to preserve ongoing projects, jobs, and company value.
Boutique Modern has been working closely with several local councils, including Adur District Council, Hastings Borough Council, and Eastbourne Borough Council. Each currently has active or planned housing developments tied to the company.
In Lancing, Adur District Council reported that construction on a 16-home council project was “at an advanced stage” and expected to finish within the next four months. However, two additional projects — nine homes at Daniel Close and seven at Gravelly Crescent — have been halted.
“We are now considering what action needs to be taken to secure the completion of the developments,” the council said, adding that it would seek to liaise with administrators for clarity on next steps.
In Hastings, work has also stopped on a 16-home scheme on Bexhill Road in St Leonards. A council spokesperson said they were “waiting for further information about what happens next and how this impacts our plans for this site.”

For now, Boutique Modern’s filing highlights the fragile balance between innovation and financial stability within the modular housing sector — and underscores how the ripple effects of one company’s financial troubles can impact local housing delivery at a time when affordable homes are needed most.
