The modular homes development in Bristol, which was hailed as groundbreaking by the city’s mayor, is facing further delays. The company building the homes, Legal & General, has announced it is closing the factory that makes them.

This is the second major setback for the development after it was revealed that some of the homes had to be removed and rebuilt due to quality issues. The closure of the factory is likely to further delay the completion of the development, which was originally due to be finished in 2022.

Legal & General has said that it will keep a number of staff on to continue work on the development, but it is unclear how long this will take. The delays are a blow to the city’s mayor, Marvin Rees, who has championed the development as a way to provide much-needed affordable housing in Bristol.

The development is also a test case for the use of modular homes in the UK, and the delays will raise questions about the viability of this type of construction.
