A modular housing manufacturer, once hailed as a solution to the affordable housing crisis, has officially canceled its plans to construct a factory in Newport News. This decision was confirmed by both city authorities and representatives from the company.

Jonathon Gruenke / Daily Press Pete Gombert, cofounder of indieDwell, leads a tour outside a display home manufactured out of recycled shipping containers at the Governor’s Housing Conference at the Hampton Roads Convention Center Nov. 20, 2019. The company plans to building a manufacturing facility in Newport News, creating 220 new jobs – Virginain-Pilot

After more than two years since the initial announcement, indieDwell, headquartered in Idaho, has withdrawn its intention to invest over $2 million in establishing a steel modular housing factory at 520 21st St., Newport News. This factory had the potential to create 220 jobs in the area.

In the aftermath of the announcement, development officials collaborated with the company to explore financing options for the factory. Unfortunately, rising construction costs and interest rates played a role in derailing the agreement, leading to its dissolution.

Derek Perry, Assistant Development Director of Newport News, expressed disappointment regarding the inability to reach a mutually beneficial agreement for the Newport News factory but emphasized that it was ultimately a sound financial decision for the company. He conveyed this message through email.
