The term Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) is a building system that allows the reduction of construction time and cost in line with the new needs emerging in today’s construction industry.
The definition alone really doesn’t tell the whole story. Offsite and modular construction people have adopted MMC as their mantra and have expanded its meaning to anything innovative in existing types of construction to entirely new ideas that in 2022 should be popping up like daisies in our backyards.
When MMC first became a common term there were few things that fell under it. They were:
- 3D volumetric construction. …
- Flat slabs. …
- Timber frames. …
- Precast panels. …
- Concrete walls and floors. …
- Precast foundations. …
- Twin wall technology.
But those types of construction have been joined by more innovative types, most of which are either in the process of being implemented or have already started production. Boxabl is just one example of how an old industry like modular housing can still find innovative entrepreneurs shaking it up from its roots.
Now add 3D cement printed homes, CLT and hemp construction products and MMC continues to expand to include more ideas that are still on the drawing boards of factories around the world.
Even AI, BIM and other software-based products are being included in the MMC basket.
So just saying that MMC is the way to construct buildings means nothing unless you begin talking about the innovative ideas, new products and methods that will be coming at us left and right in 2022.
