The Living Small line was developed to address issues facing many communities in the Pacific and Inland Northwest region. By helping to increase housing stock, Stratford seeks to improve the region’s living options with innovative, sustainable solutions that address affordability and provide flexibility for current homeowners or those in need of housing. Urban centers like Portland and Seattle have robust ADU initiatives aimed at increasing affordable housing options, alleviating displacement and meeting the needs of diverse communities.
Cities like Spokane, Post Falls, and Coeur d’Alene have also amended zoning codes to permit ADUs in an effort to reduce local housing shortages, add affordable units to the existing inventory, and protect neighborhood stability and property values. Other communities facing worker housing shortages are looking at these types of homes as an ideal solution to provide sorely needed homes without costly infrastructure upgrades.

Stratford recently built two of the units as part of their new product launch: Brook and Vale. These homes are available for tour and purchase at Stratford’s plant in Rathdrum, Idaho. Other Living Small by Stratford designs include smaller 1-bedroom units and larger 2-bedroom layouts, with more plans to be announced in the coming months.
“With Living Small, we aim to contribute to affordable housing solutions in our communities,” said David Endy, President at Stratford. “These homes are not only attractive but also offer a sustainable living option that doesn’t compromise on comfort or quality. Living Small offers the opportunity for investment in the future of smart living for communities of all sizes.”

In addition to cost-effectiveness, Living Small homes offer numerous benefits including minimal annual operating costs due to their small footprint and enhanced energy saving features. Supplemental income can be generated through rentals if not utilized as additional living space to house aging parents or welcome guests. Moreover with the efficient use of space that requires minimal land use, these homes have a very low environmental impact.
