Modular Homes: The Wave of the Future?

As I was searching for stories and news about modular and
prefab housing, I came across this article on the Opposing Views website. I
thought it was cute but as I read further into it I found that it is just
another article telling everyone that prefab or modular housing is the wave of
the future IF it looks like a flat-roofed Lego designed box.

The reporter apparently doesn’t know that modular housing
can be customized and made to look like any kind of housing the customer could
design. No, he is so enamored with the Lego boxes that he completely ignores
the more than 5 decades of real modular homes that have been built everywhere in
the US. We, the modular housing industry, must begin showing these “stuck in
West Coast mode” reporters that we actually exist and are so far ahead of the
Lego boxes in both design, sustainability and energy savings.

Modular housing eases the traditional issues that arise
during construction, while also combating energy waste. Given the increasing
amount of attention being devoted towards eco-friendly solutions to real life
problems, it is easy to see why these homes are becoming more and more popular.
 Prefab – or modular – housing is essentially
housing that is built in sections in a factory and then taken to a site to be
built. Once the shell – literally the “shell” or the outside of the house – is
erected, the rest of the home is built indoors. This technique allows constructors
to avoid common setbacks like weather, and ultimately allows for the home to be
built much faster – sometimes in a matter of weeks instead of months and years.
Unlike mobile homes, modular homes are built on permanent foundations.
 Modular housing must conform to specific rules, guidelines
and building codes that often surpass those of traditional on-site homes.
