New Zealand Offers a Good Stumbling Block for Tiny Houses

How can a stumbling block be a good thing when it comes to Tiny Houses?

It’s a good thing when New Zealand’s John Sneyd, the building system performance general manager at the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE), says he wants everyone to know “It’s important that people with tiny houses who are using them for accommodation — even if they are deemed a vehicle — are warm, dry and safe.”

There are new regulations being added to the country’s building code that should make it clear to anyone wanting to use a tiny house exactly what is permitted and the specific health and safety requirements. The final decisions will be left to the local code and building authorities to interpret for their communities.

This ‘stumbling block’ is to protect the people occupying these tiny homes and cannot be used to exclude a tiny house that meets the building code requirements.
