In the heart of New Orleans’ Lower Ninth Ward, something quietly revolutionary is taking place. A new tiny home duplex—modern, modular, and packed with dignity—now stands on a once-blighted lot. It’s the latest result of a powerful collaboration between Tulane University’s URBANbuild program and local nonprofits Louvis Services and Travelers Aid Society, all working together to tackle homelessness through intelligent design and compassionate support. While small in size, the project signals a massive shift in how we think about affordable, permanent housing for those in need.

Each year, Tulane architecture students put their knowledge to work in the real world through URBANbuild, designing and constructing energy-efficient, aesthetically pleasing homes in underserved neighborhoods.

This latest project doesn’t just offer shelter—it offers a new beginning. With features like in-unit laundry and landscaped outdoor space, the duplex offers more than basic housing—it offers hope. And unlike temporary shelters, this unit is a permanent residence, meant to provide stability and self-respect for individuals emerging from homelessness.

But what truly makes this effort stand out is its holistic approach. Louvis Services will oversee the property’s upkeep while Travelers Aid Society provides wraparound services—case management, employment support, and more—ensuring residents aren’t just housed but are given a chance to thrive. This model is one the rest of the country should be watching, especially as cities seek sustainable, modular solutions to our growing housing crisis.
